SERBIA - National review, No 56
Prologue
From the viewpoints above the canyon of the Tara one sees to the bottom of oneself. Through the clouds, through time. Belgrade has shown us that one can be visited by friends, travelers, but also by a city. During the haymaking near Smederevo we were reminded that a community rests on solidarity. In Kordun, we visited the Serbian guardians of the flames in a deep, deep night. We read a novel translated by Queen Draga. We went to Hyperborea through the paintings of Dragoša Kalajić. We leafed through the worlds of the writer Gordana Ćirjanić. (...) It is summer, deceptive like all summers before. Let us not forget to live. And that this is not a dress rehearsal. <

PROMOTIONAL CARAVAN OF THE TOB CRUISED THE BALKANS AND CENTRAL EUROPE
Belgrade Visiting
In Timisoara, with folk music and dance, people were reminded of the strong ties in tradition and culture. In Vienna, they were sipping plum rakia to the sounds of classical violin. In Banjaluka they have made a comparative study of merrymaking. They also arrived in Sofia, Zagreb, Budapest ... After a rich tourist summer at home, in September the caravan #GoBelgrade continues to Ljubljana, Skopje, Sarajevo, Podgorica, Tirana, Thessaloniki and Prague

ELEVENTH CARNIVAL IN LESKOVAC AND ITS JOYFUL RITES
Cheerfulness for Each of Our Day
Entering the second decade of existence after its restoration, this great festival has become more creative, more modern and more attractive. In early July, the week of the Carnival, Leskovac is an explosion of colors, play, beauty, joy, music, parades of masks, costumes, hairstyles. The meaning of the encounter is ancient, celebrating life, and the participants come from all over. All this has grown into one of the most visited tourist event in the Serbian part of the Balkans

HAYMAKING ON PLAVINAC, NEAR THE DANUBE, UPSTREAM FROM SMEDEREVO
Haymaking Is Driven by Joy, not Hardship
There are two things one does not doe alone: haymaking and drinking wine. One is followed by a comrade and cheered by the spirit of the community, which is being renewed through it. Since time immemorial haymaking has been done through community work: your neighbors and friends come to help, and they know that tomorrow you will come to help them. This tradition and solidarity is nurtured by this event, an equivalent of the Haymaking on Rajac. This year, it took place for the seventeenth time in a row, and the winners were Cvijeta Knežević from Vrbas and Vuk Vučković from Čačak

IN THE MOUNTAINS ABOVE FOČA, IN SRPSKA, THEY MAKE THE FAMOUS CHEESE ACCORDING TO OLD ALPINE RECIPE
Golden Wheel from Golden Pine
A Belgradian educated in Denmark and Switzerland, an expert in animal husbandry, came here two years ago for rafting down the Tara River. And he was enchanted by this height. He returned to Switzerland to get permits, a project for a farm and cheese factory, and licenses. He also imported about fifteen cows of Brown variety. He is now making the famous ”Gruyeres”, and getting ready to conquer the production of soft cheese with wild berries, such as blueberry, and porcini. Of course, there are problems, but these are fulfilled and happy people

SERBIAN MONASTERY GORICA, ON KORDUN, AND HOPE FOR A NEW LIFE
Sprouts from the Depth
Beautiful scenery, resembling Šumadija, even the third decade after the war and persecution of Serbs is half-empty, full of unhealed wounds. The remaining Serbs, and a few returnees, are trying to keep the feeble fire alive in the night. Through faith, culture, sport, through memory and traditions, from within they have been renewing the community and creating conditions for its survival. They have rebuilt the temple and the parish house, football club and some economic activities. If more people returned, especially young ones, they say, it would be easier

DRAGA MAŠIN, TRANSLATOR, AND A FORGOTTEN NOVEL
A Drama of Love and Crime
She was only eighteen when her translation of French writer X. de Montépin’s novel ”Police Officer, Cat’s Eye” started being published in sequels in ”Ustavnost” magazine, on September 1, 1884. Compared to the Croatian translation, issued at the same time, hers had ”much more beauty, colors and refinedness of language”. Some attribute it to Bogdan Popović, later famous anthology compiler and aesthetician, who seemed to be much more than a French teacher to Draga Lunjevica, future Serbian queen. It was nineteen years before her own life would turn into a cruel novel

DRAGIŠA BRAŠOVAN (1887-1965), ARCHITECT, IN THE MEMORIES OF HIS HUNDRED-YEAR-OLD WIFE
The First Century of Mrs. Victoria
Many famous edifices are behind him, an entire century behind her. ”The Girl with a Lute”, painted by Đura Jakšić, which he gave her as a gift before their wedding, ended up in the personal chambers of Josip Broz. Udba suggested them to give it to him as a gift. It is known that Brašovan made the designs for the Home of Aviation in Zemun, BIGZ, ”Metropol” Hotel, the Banate of Danube building (province government) in Novi Sad, church in Orlovat, Genčić’s House (Tesla’s Museum)… It is little known, however, that he, made the first design of New Belgrade between 1939 and 1941

ABOUT DRAGOŠ KALAJIĆ’S (1943-2005) ”KNIGHT OF THE ORDER OF LIGHT” EXHIBITION, IN EIGHT THUNDERING VOICES
Outlines of Our Internal Empire
His art and ideas indicated an order older than the Fall and history. Serbian culture needs a new reading of Dragoš Kalajić, purified from everything marginal and accidental, and his permanent positioning in a place that indisputably belongs to him. In Western Europe and Russia, much more often and more consistent than in Serbia, Kalajić is mentioned together with Evola and Malaparte, with Jünger and Dumézil, with Solzhenitsyn and Zinoviev, with De Chirico and Glazunov. They are not forgetting how many generations and layers of culture it takes for the appearance of a personality with such knowledge and importance in a nation

GORDANA ĆIRJANIĆ, WRITER, A LADY OF SEVEN WORLDS
In My Inner Self I’m Always at Home
It is hard for a contemplative person to fit into the world offered today. We are all losers. We are deeply out of step with reason and reality, we are being fed like geese with meaningless contents, anesthetized by served images. Information gained priority over knowledge, entertainment invaded the space of art, the incited market became the only measure of culture. Literary life does not exist, all genuine channels of reception disappeared. However, at all times, the minority preserved the spark, defended the islands of meaning. Ideologies imposed us the dogma that the majority is the measure of all values, even spiritual ones. But it’s not so

MUSEUM OF SRPSKA, GUARDIAN OF HERITAGE AND IDENTITY
Home of the Memory of People
It changed five social systems, four states, six names, seven addresses, survived two wars, three peaces and one destructive earthquake, but, despite it all, it managed to preserve the national treasure. Today it has more than 30.000 exhibits of first-class cultural importance. It is hoping to get a new building, modern and practical, in the urban center of Banjaluka, as it deserves

Fairytale
WORLDS ON RIVERS, MYSTERIOUS AND PURE
The Lim Mermaid
The Lim, as any other river, has its river Mermaid. Whoever hears her song will never be sad again. In order to see it, you must come to the river at dawn, in the mysterious moment when the night separates from the day. Once the Lim Mermaid swam after Ika to Belgrade to bring her an apple. Down the Lim, the Drina and the Sava. She liked the Sava so much that she didn’t want to go back home. That is why the enchanted Mandrel the dwarf was late for the end of the fairytale
